The silence of the library was unbearable.
Arlecchino sat at his desk, absent-mindedly fiddling with his quill. The papers in front of him remained blank, his thoughts jumbled. He sighed, tapped his finger on the tabletop, and glanced at the tall bookshelves. Boring.
He'd come here with the intention of working-or at least giving the appearance of working. But, as always, his mind drifted toward something more entertaining.
What if I wrote Pierrot a declaration of love?
The thought itself was so ridiculous that Arlecchino hummed. Oh, that might be funny! To imagine-his icy friend reading something pompous and melodramatic, written in the most pretentious syllable..... Arlecchino chuckled and, wasting no time, dipped his quill into the inkwell.
He cleared his throat as if he were going to recite, and with an important look began to write:
“Oh, my incomparable Pierrot!
Your eyes are like the glow of the morning stars, and your voice like the soft rustle of the pages of ancient folios! Oh, how languidly I wait for the moment when you will again illuminate me with your wise, penetrating gaze!
You-alchemist, who mixed in my heart a potion of unknown feelings! I am but a humble traveler in this world, and the only thing I long for is to drown in the vast ocean of your indifference!
If you reject me, know that I will suffer. I may even fall in a dramatic rush, with my hand on my forehead, so that the whole world may know of my sorrow!
But if there be a drop of sympathy in your cold-blooded heart.... Then, Pierrot, prepare yourself! I'll shout our love in the streets of this city!
Yours forever devoted, Arlecchino!”
He chuckled as he reread what he had written. Ah, what a splendid message! So pretentious, so pompous-he could already imagine reading it aloud with expression.
- What are you writing?
The voice behind made him jump. He slammed the paper down sharply with palms and turned around.
Pierrot was standing beside , his head tilted to the side. His eyes showed a slight interest and the usual calmness.
- N-nothing! - Arlecchino blurted out too loudly. - Nothing at all!
- Really?
- Of course! I was just... Uh... Working notes! Yes!
Pierrot looked at him, then slid his gaze over the papers that Arlecchino was frantically clutching to the table.
- Work notes, you mean?
- Exactly! Weekly plans, church arrangements, new clients, complicated things, you wouldn't understand!
Pierrot stared at him silently for a few more seconds, then grinned with the edge of his lips.
- All right, it's none of my business.
And calmly turned around, going to the bookshelves.
Arlecchino exhaled noisily as he waited for the man to move away. Then he looked down at his letter again and burst into tears nervously, hoping Pierrot would never find out about the message.
